Using Portfolio Analysis with Project Online or Project Server
Successful project and portfolio management should answer the following questions:
· Are we investing in the right initiatives based on our organizations business priorities?
· Which investments will produce an optimized portfolio of projects?
· Are there areas that we are willing to forgo strategic alignment?
· What are the consequences of changes in strategic direction?
If your organization cannot objectively answer these questions and you often wonder, why are we doing this project, consider implementing Portfolio Analysis. Portfolio Analysis can be implemented in both Project Online and on premise installations of Project Server.
Portfolio Analysis provides organizations with the ability to objectively prioritize projects based on how each project is ranked against established business drivers. The initial baseline scenario represents the unconstrained selection of every project within the portfolio. Organizations can then determine if they have enough money to do all the selected projects and if so do they have necessary resources. What-if analysis can be calculated to determine the impact on the portfolio if cost or resource constraints change. For example, if we force in a compliance project what project or projects will then be forced out?
