Project Server Workflow Getting Cancelled

Recently I ran into issue where Project Server workflow getting cancelled immediately after initiation. The “Additional Workflow Data” page were showing workflow status as “Cancelled” with below error message.

Parameter name: Input at Microsoft.Activities.Hosting.Runtime.Subroutine.SubroutineChild.Execute(CodeActivityContext context) at System.Activities.CodeActivity.InternalExecute(ActivityInstance instance, ActivityExecutor executor, BookmarkManager bookmarkManager) at System.Activities.Runtime.ActivityExecutor.ExecuteActivityWorkItem.ExecuteBody(ActivityExecutor executor, BookmarkManager bookmarkManager, Location resultLocation)

After further troubleshooting we found that issue is occurring while setting the workflow stage status. On close examination we identified that stage status message contains “&” character which was causing this issue. Issue resolved after removing “&” from stage status message and publishing the workflow. Looks like workflow fails if it find special characters like “&” in stage status message.
