New Microsoft Planner Updates 2025
Microsoft has introduced significant updates to Microsoft Planner over the past year, enhancing its functionality and user experience:
Unified Experience and AI Integration
The new Microsoft Planner unifies Microsoft Planner, Project for the web, Microsoft To Do, and Microsoft Copilot into a cohesive work management solution. This integration provides a simple and familiar interface, enabling individuals and teams to manage tasks more effectively. Advanced features such as goals, people views, sprints, baselines, critical paths, and next-generation AI functionalities have been incorporated to assist users in staying on track and achieving their objectives.
Web Rollout and Enhanced Features
In October 2024, Microsoft began rolling out the new Planner experience to the web, making it generally available to all users. This update allows seamless management of tasks across Microsoft To Do, Planner, and Project, leveraging AI capabilities through Microsoft 365 Copilot for Planner (preview). Notable enhancements include the ability to export plans to Excel, copy existing plans, and access plans created within Teams meetings.
AI-Powered Project Management
December 2024 saw the introduction of the Project Manager agent, an AI-driven virtual project manager integrated into Planner. This feature streamlines workflows by handling routine tasks, allowing users to focus on more strategic aspects of their projects.
Recent Updates
As of January 2025, Microsoft implemented additional features to enhance task management:
Reordering Columns in Grid View: Users can now personalize their Planner experience by reordering columns in ‘My Day’ and ‘My Tasks’, allowing for customized task organization based on individual preferences.
Removal of Default Completed Tasks Filter: The default filter that hid completed tasks has been removed, granting users more control over task visibility. Users can now choose which tasks to display using the filter settings.
Conversion of Basic Plans to Premium: Users can convert basic plans to premium by selecting the Timeline or any premium views in the plan header, unlocking advanced capabilities such as task dependencies, premium plan templates, reports, timeline (Gantt) view, backlogs and sprints, people management, and project goals.
These developments reflect Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing Planner’s capabilities, making it a more powerful and user-friendly tool for task and project management.
